Snow Ice like home explores the smells of child hood memories in the Caribbean. Many migrants from the Caribbean would have settled in the UK having to be used to new sights and smells, including that of foods. Not all vegetables, or, spices were available in the UK and certainly some of the sights and smells of back home would have been missed.
Most children in the Caribbean would have a snow ice after school, it’s a treat. Its shaved ice with a pouring of a sweet fruity syrup over the top. It’s put in a bag to suck from or in a snow cone cup to hold. Flavours range from Condensed milk, ginger, tamarind, sorrel, mango, pineapple and much more. There are many variations on a Snow ice theme throughout the Caribbean Islands. Today some are made to look pretty like a rainbow with artificial flavourings. Others laden with fruits and crushed juices.
Here’s a pretend play activity in which you can make different smelling snow ice cones with the smells from Caribbean fruits and spices. An activity suitable for 2 year olds and upwards using toddler safe ingredients to make a cloud dough. You can keep them naturally coloured or choose to add food dye. Only 3 ingredients needed to make the basic dough, then it’s up to you which smells suit your taste. I found the creamed coconut, or cocoa the most successful smells. It keeps in a bag or tub for a few days. Use scoops and cookie cutters to extend further play.
See the pdf for the ingredients and how to make your own pretend snow ice cones.
